Cinnamon In the past five years, solid research, first in India and now elsewhere, has demonstrated the value of the ground-up bark of the cinnamon tree in dramatically lowering glucose levels of diabetics and insulin-resistant individuals.6,7 The spice acts just like insulin on insulin receptors, allowing cells to take up sugar. Typical daily do^e: Start with 500-1,000 mg (1/4-1/2 teaspoon) twice a day
Chromium The trace mineral chromium interacts with insulin receptors and improves insulin's action. |

Ginseng, cinnamon, and tea have been shown to help increase insulin receptivity, which can help lower the risk of aging from diabetes. Some studies have shown that one of the substances in ginseng berries (not the root) and a half teaspoon of cinnamon a day can increase insulin receptivity by over 50 percent. The supplement chromium (at 200 meg a day) has been shown to increase sensitivity to insulin as well. If you get diabetes, all is not lost. A small amount of weight loss can make the difference between elevated blood sugar and normal blood sugar. |

Cinnamon lowers blood sugar; nutmeg relieves nausea; cloves are anti-inflammatory; ginger relieves morning sickness; peppermint inhibits the growth of bacteria; cumin is great for digestion; cayenne pepper increases metabolism; chili powder eases pain; curry powder safeguards your brain; cinnamon stimulates circulation; cardamom soothes indigestion; turmeric is good for practically everything—the list is endless. Spices are truly the variety of life, nature in all its pungent and aromatic glory. |
| Broadhurst and her team identified new phytochemicals in cinnamon called chalcone polymers that increase glucose metabolism in the cells twentyfold or more.
Cinnamon also contains anthocyanins, which improve capillary function. And a compound that has a very similar molecular composition to the ones found by Broadhurst's team has been shown to inhibit the formation of ulcers and increase blood flow to the stomach in rats. The chalcone polymers that Broadhurst was so excited about are also powerful antioxidants. |

You can sprinkle cinnamon powder on fresh fruit, such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, pomegranate seeds, and cantaloupe. Ground cinnamon spice is much less expensive than capsules.
In this chapter, we've offered ways to jump-start your recovery from being prediabetic and overweight, mostly by focusing on foods to help control your appetite. In the next chapter, we provide guidelines for improving your overall relationship with food. Later in the book, we'll teach you how to navigate grocery stores, health food markets, specialty markets, and a variety of restaurants. |

We also do a dish of baked bananas with raisins, cinnamon, and honey, served with fresh organic cream. Grilled polenta slices with cinnamon, honey, and cream beat any waffle or pancake and are gluten-free. (See recipe section in Chapter Eighteen).
Casual Lunches
For a casual lunch we serve various breads such as rye, whole wheat, rice, or corn crackers and dips, and of course, plenty of salads. Whole wheat pita bread stuffed with salad is a firm favorite and for a delicious gluten-free meal we love grilled polenta slices served with grilled vegetables and mashed avocados. |

Other antifungal and antibacterial herbs used to treat candidiasis include German chamomile, ginger, cinnamon, gentian, and licorice. (Because certain compounds in licorice can be toxic at high doses, it's best to take deglycyrrhizinated licorice supplements).
Probiotics
A healthy growth of "friendly" bacteria in the intestines—particularly Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum—is the best defense against yeast infections. Cabbage is one of the best food sources of friendly bacteria; eat it raw or juice it daily. |

From a scientific standpoint, there is absolutely no question that drinking bitter melon as a tea (or taking it as a supplement) helps regulate blood sugar. cinnamon has a similar effect, as do many other herbs. These medicinal plants have been used for thousands of years to support human health. It is only in the last 75 years or so that western medicine has gained power over the industry and surreptitiously declared that all of the medicinal herbs used for thousands of years throughout human history are now suddenly inert or harmful. |

Another of my favorites is to add cinnamon powder, coconut oil, rice protein powder and stevia. It makes for an excellent "cinnamon oatmeal" replacement, without all the carbohydrates.
But don't think that all barley is the same. Rolled barley has a very different effect on your body than pearled barley. Rolled barley has a higher glycemic index and acts a lot more like oatmeal. Therefore, it should be avoided. Stick to pearled barley as your grain of choice. |

This was a Roman conversazione ("conversation"), not unlike the tertulias which we have described for Madrid:
One finds at this "conversation" all the most beautiful Roman princesses, and one is served a great deal of chocolate, very foamy, very well made and without vanilla, simply cacao with cinnamon. The Italians think themselves "burned" if they use vanilla. I didn't think I could get used to it, but I find it very good. |
| Chocolate is not "cold" but "hot"—it is a mistake to think it "cold" and then proceed to add the "hottest drugs" like cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, clovers, ambergris, and achiote. "I know certain serious and taciturn persons, who by virtue of this Drink, become fot a while the gteatest chatterers, some lose sleep and get hot-headed, othets become angry and shout. In childten it awakens such an agitation that in no way can they be quiet ot sit in one place. |
| However,
Stubbes recommended that "cold" constitutions should add allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to the concoction (the Spanish authorities had already deemed these to be "hot"). He is also aware of those aromatic Tuscan embellishments—musk, ambergris, citron, and lemon peel. Stubbes suggests adding sack (sherry) to chocolate made with milk and eggs, one spoonful to a dish (the English of the day often drank their coffee and chocolate from dishes rather than cups). With such additions, small wonder that Stubbes claimed one ounce of chocolate equal in nourishment to one pound of beef. |

Have you ever taken a large, raw fig right off a fig tree, then stuffed it with raw almond butter, cinnamon, goji berries and chocolate? I haven't either. But for some reason, the Empowered Foods team thought this would be a great idea (did it come to them in a dream?), so they created a product out of it. The product rocks. Personally, I love raw figs in the first place (they're WAY better than the typical dried figs you get in the store). |

Other herbs: Do not exceed 20 drops every 2 hours or 1 capsule every 4 hours if using a single herb. Several herbs may be used in combination, and in these cases it is important to consult a reference book or an herbal practitioner to know the dose limitations.

I also slammed some zinc, 2000mg of vitamin C, plus a round of Chinese herbs like cinnamon and Dang Gui. When fighting cold symptoms, I also eat or drink nothing cold and consume only hot or warm foods and beverages. The next morning, all my symptoms were completely gone, never to return.
I experienced this twice over the last few months. In both cases, the Power Immune product helped me beat an oncoming flu overnight, with zero symptoms the next day. |

Imagine raw cacao with agave nectar, cinnamon, vanilla, nuts and seeds, blended together in a tongue-teasing recipe that gives you a natural chocolate high without the blood sugar problems found in sugary chocolate bars. This chocolate food bar impressed me so much that I bought five boxes myself and have been handing them out to people ever since. The feedback? Everybody loves 'em.
This is an outstanding chocolate superfood bar from a company that deserves some good recognition for keeping their products honest and well-intentioned. Highly recommended. Five stars. |
| Speaking of what's inside, here's the ingredients list: Agave nectar, Goji berries, Ecuadorian cacao powder (non-hybrid criollo variety), walnuts, Hunza raisins, coconut, dates, sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, maca powder, truly raw sun-dried vanilla powder, cinnamon, sustainably hand-harvested Himalayan crystal salt, cayenne pepper, and "lots of love."
You'll notice that just about every ingredient listed here is a superfood of one kind or another. This is truly a chocolate superfood product. Five stars, highly recommended.

Vata people may want to include the energy of cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, ginger, sea salt, cloves, mustard, and licorice in their diets at the appropriate times. Pitta people would do better to avoid spices except for cinnamon, coriander, and dill.
The use of herbs in this way reaffirms the principle that each food has its own energy essence. Western nutrition's singular focus on classifying foods as simply carbohydrate, protein, and fat increases our sense of separation from food and our disharmony with Nature.

Garlic, onion, allspice and oregano, for example, were found to be the best all-around bacteria killers (they kill everything), followed by thyme, cinnamon, tarragon and cumin (any of which kill up to 80% of bacteria). Capsicums, including chilies and other hot peppers, are in the middle of the antimicrobial pack (killing or inhibiting up to 75% of bacteria), while pepper of the white or black variety inhibits 25% of bacteria, as do ginger, anise seed, celery seed and the juices of lemons and limes. |
